Wigan add Man City to other top flight scalps (Bournemouth, West Ham)

Will Grigg became the top scorer in this season’s FA Cup as his goal helped Wigan upset Man City at the DW. Paul Cook’s men have now upset three top tier teams, with Manchester City their latest victims after their previous triumphs against AFC Bournemouth and West Ham United.

The stats favoured league leaders City, who had 83% of the ball and 26 shots to WAFC’s 4, but Wigan, who beat them in the 2013 final, will now host a last eight clash against Southampton. The Latics, currently in League One, are only the second team after Millwall from outside the top two divisions to beat three or more Premier League sides in the same Cup campaign.

All conquering Man City have now been held goalless by three teams this season across all competitions- Wolves, Crystal Palace and now Wigan Athletic. Continue reading “Wigan add Man City to other top flight scalps (Bournemouth, West Ham)”

Most Consecutive wins in a single Premier League season- Man City equal Arsenal & Chelsea record

With their late 2-1 win over West Ham United over the weekend, Manchester City have equalled the record for most consecutive wins in a single Premier League season- 13, jointly held by Arsenal and Chelsea.

City will get the opportunity to extend that figure to 14 when they take on rivals Manchester United in the derby this weekend.

The Citizens are eight points ahead of the Red Devils in the league table.

Alberto Brignoli- First Goalkeeper to score in Serie A since Massimo Taibi (2001)

Benevento goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli wrote himself into the history books with his stoppage time header against Gennaro Gatuso’s AC Milan that gave his side their first EVER point in Serie A history.

Brignoli is on loan at Benevento from Juve, and the club’s other goal scorer in this 2-2 draw against Milan- Puscas, is a loanee from Inter.

Brignoli is also the first goalkeeper to score in Serie A since Massimo Taibi (Reggina) back on 1st April, 2001 (no, not an April Fool’s Joke!). There have been others too like Michelangelo Rampulla (Cremonese) in 1992, but goalies scoring goals, as you’d expect, are a rare breed

Huddersfield Town- the last Premier League team to concede a goal in 17/18 season

Huddersfield Town became the last Premier League team to concede a goal in the current 2017-2018 season when West Ham’s Pedro Obiang scored against the Terriers in the second half of their game at the London Stadium.

It was an important game for West Ham- the last time, they lost three in a row at the start of the league season, they were relegated. However all those three losses this season have come away from home- the London Stadium was not available for use early in the season (they even had special dispensation to change the venue of their Cup tie), and they managed to turn things around in their first game in front of their fans. Tottenham’s first London derby league loss at home under Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham suffered their first ever London derby Premier League loss at home under Mauricio Pochettino when they went down 2-1 at Wembley to Antonio Conte’s Chelsea side earlier this evening (August 20, 2017).

Spurs certainly had their chances to win and they were seemingly on course to do so after Batshuayi’s own goal that brought them level, but some poor decision making from skipper Hugo Lloris allowed Marcos Alonso to snatch his second of the afternoon (his first was a beautiful free kick) Continue reading “Tottenham’s first London derby league loss at home under Mauricio Pochettino”
